Treatment using the traditional techniques of Chinese medical qigong is a unique experience. The patient is assessed using subtle methods of perception of the body’s qi (pronounced “chee”), which is a component of the organic force of life. Qi is the required integration of the forces in the body to allow for healthy functioning. When qi does not flow correctly disease will eventually ensue. The medical qigong practitioner uses the force of his or her own qi to correct the patient’s qi. The correction to the patient’s qi may require pressure on correspondence areas on the body that act as a microcosm to the organs and internal structures. Often there is pain or discomfort when pressure is applied to the correspondence zones, as these areas are stagnant in their flow of qi and circulation. As the person’s health improves the sensitivity will diminish. During treatment the patient will be asked to breathe in certain patterns by making specific breath sounds. The breath sounds help to change the patient’s metabolism and increase the treatment response. Also, due to the movement of the qi in the patient’s body, sensation may be perceived at a place distant from the point of contact by the practitioner. The patient should expect changes in sensation, temperature, or emotions, which are all connected to the state of the qi.
After treatment the practitioner may prescribe exercises to facilitate the ongoing development of the patient’s qi to a more healthy state. The practitioner may also indicate a number of treatments that are required to make a lasting improvement in the patient’s state of health. After treatment the patient should not exert him or herself and should avoid extreme states of emotional upset, rather the change to the qi should be allowed to take effect gently and naturally. Traditional Chinese Medical qigong treatment is a treasure from the classical period, which allows us to improve the health of our body, mind, and spirit. It should be considered as a pearl of traditional medicine.
